Stephanie is a third generation Philoptochos member for over 40 years and has lived in the Metropolis of Detroit for all but 2 years of her life. She and her husband, Theodore (Archon Hartophylax), on a mission trip with the Orthodox Christian Mission Center to Fort Portal, Uganda to build a church in 1992. They are active stewards at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Memphis, TN. Stephanie has been a member of the Metropolis of Detroit Philoptochos Board since 2011, having served as Second Vice President and most recently as First Vice President. She was appointed to the National Philoptochos Board in 2022 by His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros and is honored to currently be the President of the Metropolis of Detroit Philoptochos (October 2024). She has been an active member of her Philoptochos Chapter in Memphis having served as President, Recording Secretary and Board member for many years.
Stephanie is a Pediatric Critical Care Physician who recently retired after 38 years of service to the children and their families in Memphis, TN and the Midsouth at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. As an academic physician, she was a faculty member at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Medicine since 1987, as Professor (tenured) in the Department of Pediatrics and as the Chair of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies since 2016. She was honored with the appointment as UTHSC College of Medicine Professor Emeritus after retiring. She received her BS in Biology from the University of Cincinnati (1979), her MD from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo (1982) where she also did her Pediatric Residency (1985) and completed her training with a Fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Los Angeles Children’s Hospital/University of Southern California (1987).
Stephanie and Ted have two children, Nicholas and Constance. Nicholas and his wife Anna (Crandall) are living in Memphis, both in business fields, while Constance, who recently received her MD from UTHSC College of Medicine, is currently in Minneapolis, MN in her Pediatric Residency. We are blessed that our children are all active in the Church and in Philoptochos.
Stephanie’s passion for Philoptochos includes caring for those who are unhoused, hungry, and/or ill, sharing our faith, mentoring young women and men in their pursuit of careers and in life, and in serving the church.
