Wishing Trees

Wishing Trees in Ithaca, New York

On behalf of the Philoptochos of St. Catherine in Ithaca, New York, I am pleased to report that we do indeed support making Christmas wishes come true. Please see the attached photos of our giving tree. Parishioners take an angel, purchase the wish, and return it wrapped. The gifts and food for a Christmas feast (donated by Philoptochos) are delivered to the family. This effort is organized by our local Salvation Army.

In addition, we send po...insettias to our shut-ins, and we are supporting the December OCF Health Kit Drive.    -Carol Dentes Wilhelm

Wishing Trees in Greenwood Village, Colorado!

It starts with six small Christmas trees and culminates into hundreds of gifts for those in need. For over 10 years, our St. Catherine Philoptochos Chapter has been sponsoring the Giving Trees each Christmas. Four families from two local schools are selected by the school social workers and determined to be the most in need based on their circumstances.

We also sponsor a family from Brent’s Place which provides housing for fam...ilies whose children are going through life saving cancer treatment. The African Community Center in Denver also receives 3-4 sewing machines so that immigrants can learn new skills that help them to be self-sufficient.

Gifts include clothing, household items, toys, shoes and gift cards for meals and groceries. Our parish generously fulfills every gift each year and enables us to deliver hundreds of gifts to both children and adults making Christmas bright for many.

The greatest gift of all is the love and fellowship we experience by doing this and living the word of Christ.   -Elaine Cladis

Wishing Trees in Danbury, Connecticut!

At Christmas time our Philoptochos of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Danbury, Connecticut adopts several local families from DCF - Danbury Child Family Social Services. Adopted families have 2 to 8 family members. Our GOYA adopts the largest family, our other youth groups JOY and HOPE collect gloves, hats, scarves, socks and gift cards. Our parish also donates food and store gift cards for the families as well or adopt a family.

We ...also have a parishioner with her daughters that organize a toy drive for the agency as well.

Our youth group visits a few of our older members that are in local nursing homes and sing Christmas Carols to them.

Our youth groups collect nonperishable foods which they deliver to food banks. Our Philoptochos collects toiletries year round which we have given to local shelters and for National Philoptochos when they feed the hungry in NYC.

Wishing Trees in Seattle, Washington!

The Philoptochos Chapter at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Assumption in Seattle, WA has been putting up a wishing tree for the past 3 years. This year our tree is supporting Jubilee Women’s Center a long term transitional housing program for homeless women.
