National Philoptochos responds quickly and with compassion to provide aid to those in the US and throughout the world affected by national disasters such as blizzards, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis and wild fires.

In 2015, we immediately distributed $20,000 for Nepali Disaster Relief as first response aid to assist those affected by the devastating earthquakes in Nepal.

Crippling floods, hurricanes and tornadoes struck our world in 2016.  National Philoptochos donated $50,000 to International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) to assist victims of the West Virginia Floods and Hurricane Matthew, which affected the Southeastern US and Caribbean. Later in the year, horrific flooding devastated Louisiana, and $35,000 was disbursed for emergency aid and rebuilding efforts. In the fall, the buildings and infrastructure at Ionian Village were severely damaged due to a tornado. National Philoptochos provided $20,000 in assistance to the camp, bringing total disbursements in 2016 to $105,000.

National Philoptochos sincerely thanks the faithful stewards and chapters who have contributed to the Emergency Fund to enable us to respond immediately throughout the world to assist our brothers and sisters in times of critical need.

Talking To Your Children About Violent Events

Although we would like to protect our children from hearing about events like the Boston Marathon bombings, the school or movie theater shootings in Newtown, CT and Aurora, CO the repeated images and reporting on television and internet postings don’t allow this. But what we can do is talk about these events to our children to help them understand what happened and to help them cope with their emotions in a healthy manner.  For suggested steps to help you appropriately address the questions, concerns and feelings of anxiety that your children may have, please click here.
