Time Dated Assistance

TIME DATED ASSISTANCE:
Periodically, natural or other disasters occur that devastate lives. In these times, Philoptochos stands ready to assist in ways that are in addition to the regular help we provide. As such occurrences take place, we will update this page to inform our community of the help that is available.
September 2011
HURRICANE / TROPICAL STORM IRENE
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE
TO GREEK ORTHODOX / ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY
Hurricane / Tropical Storm Irene devastated homes, businesses and communities on the East Coast of the United States.
We recognize that some people may be covered by insurance and/or are applying for FEMA assistance; nevertheless, our hope and concern is to ensure that those affected by the massive floods are not doubly victimized because of the time lag for receiving such help. As such, and to help members of the Greek Orthodox / Orthodox Christian community deal with their tremendous losses, we stand ready to assist through targeted financial assistance.
While our limited resources prevent us from being able to replace or repair everything that has been lost or destroyed and our procedures mandate that we document need as best as possible, we can offer immediate relief.
In response to conditions caused by Hurricane / Tropical Storm Irene, some of the ways National Philoptochos’ Social Work Services can help individuals and families are as follows:
- Partially helping to cover insurance deductibles and/or co-payments
- Helping to address health-related risks such as helping to pay for the removal of mold and mildew caused by flooding
- Assisting older adults and physically disabled persons to pay for heavy duty clean-up of their homes and yards, including help towards the cost of removing downed trees from their property.
- Assisting to replace medications that were lost in the floods that will not be replaced by the persons’ prescription drug plans.
- Assisting to replace some household items that were destroyed that are needed immediately, such as beds and bedding, table and chairs, small appliances, etc.
- Assisting with some immediate living expenses, e.g. housing costs, utilities, food, etc., if the loss of their business or livelihood has rendered them unable to pay such costs.
